E-book Vendor Consolidation Kick-Off?
Britain’s Pearson and Germany’s Bertelsmann are planning to merge their publishing units, Penguin and Random House, in order to regain a competitive position with technology groups Amazon and Apple, the leaders in the e-book revolution.
The book publishing industry today is a virtual oligopoly strewn with a considerable number of relatively small companies. Does this merger mark the beginning of a consolidation acceleration? Will this be good for the industry?
